There is y there are significan hay. Usa there is con una sola cosa o con algo que no se cuenta (There is a bank near here, There is milk) y there are con dos o más (There are two banks). Para preguntar se invierte el orden: Is there…?, Are there…?
There is o there are: mira lo que viene después
Si son varias, are.
| Lo que sigue | Forma | Ejemplo | Español |
|---|---|---|---|
| Una cosa (con a o an) | there is | There is a chair here. | Hay una silla aquí. |
| Dos o más cosas | there are | There are four chairs. | Hay cuatro sillas. |
| Algo que no se cuenta (water, milk, money, traffic) | there is | There is milk in the fridge. | Hay leche en el refrigerador. |
- There is a pharmacy on the corner.Hay una farmacia en la esquina.
- There is a sale today.Hoy hay oferta.
- There are stores around my house.Hay tiendas alrededor de mi casa.
- There are a lot of people here.Aquí hay mucha gente.People es plural en inglés, por eso are.
- There is a lot of traffic today.
Al hablar, there is casi siempre se contrae en there's.
| Forma | Suena aprox. | Ejemplo |
|---|---|---|
| there is / there's | "der is" / "ders" | There's a problem. Hay un problema. |
| there are | "dér ar" | There are two options. Hay dos opciones. |
| is there…? | "is der" | Is there a bathroom? ¿Hay baño? |
| are there…? | "ar der" | Are there any tickets? ¿Hay boletos? |
En conversación vas a oír a hablantes nativos decir there's two… con plurales. Es informal. Cuando escribas, o si dudas, usa there are con plurales y no vas a fallar.
Negaciones: there isn't, there aren't y there's no
Para decir "no hay", pon not después de is o are.
|---|---|---|
| there isn't a… | There isn't a bank here. | Aquí no hay banco. |
| there isn't any… | There isn't any milk. | No hay leche. |
| there aren't any… | There aren't any chairs. | No hay sillas. |
| there's no… | There's no milk. | No hay leche. |
| there are no… | There are no tickets. | No hay boletos. |
Preguntas: is there y are there
Para preguntar "¿hay…?", pon is o are delante de there.
- Is there a bank near here?¿Hay un banco cerca de aquí?
- Is there Wi-Fi in the room?¿Hay wifi en la habitación?
- Is there a discount?¿Hay descuento?
- Are there any tickets for tonight?¿Hay boletos para esta noche?
- Are there any questions?¿Hay preguntas?
| Pregunta | Sí | No |
|---|---|---|
| Is there a bathroom here? | Yes, there is. | No, there isn't. |
| Are there any tickets? | Yes, there are. | No, there aren't. |
¿Cuántos hay? How many… are there?
Para preguntar la cantidad, empieza con How many + la cosa en plural, y termina con are there.
- How many people are there in your family?¿Cuántas personas hay en tu familia?
- There are five people in my family.En mi familia somos cinco.Literalmente, "hay cinco personas en mi familia".
- How many rooms are there?¿Cuántas habitaciones hay?
| Quieres decir | Correcto | Evita |
|---|---|---|
| ¿Hay un banco cerca? | Is there a bank near here? | Has a bank near here? |
| En mi ciudad hay muchos parques. | There are a lot of parks in my city. | In my city have many parks. |
| Hay dos baños. | There are two bathrooms. | There is two bathrooms. |
| Hay un restaurante nuevo. Es muy bueno. | There's a new restaurant. It's very good. | There's a new restaurant. There's very good. |
| Hay que pagar aquí. | You have to pay here. | There is to pay here. |
Para el lugar necesitas in, on o near (las preposiciones están en at, in y on).
- There is a sofa in the living room.Hay un sofá en la sala.
- There are two beds in my bedroom.Hay dos camas en mi cuarto.
- There is a mirror in the bathroom.Hay un espejo en el baño.
- There isn't a garden.No hay jardín.
- There is a park near my house.Hay un parque cerca de mi casa.
- There aren't any big stores in my neighborhood.En mi barrio no hay tiendas grandes.
Había, hubo: there was y there were
En pasado funciona igual, con was para una cosa y were para varias. There was a delay es "hubo un retraso" y There were a lot of people at the party es "había mucha gente en la fiesta".

| 2. Hay dos baños en mi casa. | There are two bathrooms in my house. |
| 3. ¿Hay wifi? | Is there Wi-Fi? |
| 4. No hay leche. | There's no milk. / There isn't any milk. |
| 5. ¿Cuántas personas hay? | How many people are there? |
| 6. Hoy hay mucho tráfico. | There's a lot of traffic today. |

| 9. Había mucha gente en la fiesta. | There were a lot of people at the party. |
| 10. ¿Hay un hotel cerca del aeropuerto? | Is there a hotel near the airport? |
Si fallaste la 5, repasa el orden: How many + plural + are there.
Preguntas frecuentes
¿Cuál es la diferencia entre there is y there are?
Las dos significan "hay". There is va con una sola cosa o con algo que no se cuenta (There is a bank, There is water). There are va con dos o más cosas (There are two banks).
¿Cómo se pregunta "¿hay...?" en inglés?
Con Is there...? para una cosa (Is there a bathroom?) y Are there...? para varias (Are there any tickets?). Las respuestas cortas son Yes, there is / No, there isn't y Yes, there are / No, there aren't.
¿Se puede decir "there's two"?
Lo vas a oír en conversación informal, pero la forma correcta con plurales es there are: There are two options. Al escribir, usa siempre there are.
Porque have significa "tener" y necesita a alguien que tenga algo: My city has a lot of parks. Para decir que algo existe en un lugar, el inglés usa there is o there are: There are a lot of parks in my city.
