Qué significa «get the idea» en inglés

De la escena de Narnia · Actualizado el

Get the idea significa entender, captar la idea: comprender cómo funciona algo o qué quiere decir alguien. Al final de una explicación, you get the idea equivale a «ya me entiendes» o «ya te haces una idea».

Qué significa

En esta expresión get no es «conseguir»: es «entender», como en I don't get it (no lo entiendo). Merriam-Webster la define así, como «entender». Se usa de tres formas:

FormaQué significaEjemplo
get the idea (of something)entender cómo funciona algoI think you've got the idea now. (Creo que ya le agarraste la onda.)
you get the ideaya me entiendes, etcéteraPizza, burgers, fries… you get the idea. (Pizza, hamburguesas, papas… ya te imaginas.)
get the idea that…hacerse la idea de que…, creer que…Where did you get the idea that I was angry? (¿De dónde sacaste que estaba enojado?)

Con have got el sentido es el mismo: you've got the idea = you get the idea. En negativo, you haven't got the idea es «no has entendido cómo va».

Cómo se usa en la escena de Narnia

Los hermanos juegan a las escondidas y Lucy aparece diciendo que estuvo fuera mucho tiempo. El mayor responde: I'm not sure you two have quite got the idea of this game («No estoy seguro de que ustedes dos hayan entendido bien de qué va este juego»). Para él, el juego se está jugando mal. Quite («del todo») suaviza la crítica.
